UN University Highlights Environmental Impact of AI Infrastructure
The United Nations University (UNU) has raised concerns about the environmental impact of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, emphasizing the need for comprehensive environmental assessments. According to the UNU Institute for Water, Environment and Health, AI-related data centers are projected to have significant environmental impacts by 2030, potentially consuming nearly three times the combined electricity use of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. The report highlights that focusing solely on carbon footprints provides an incomplete picture, as shifts to bioenergy could drastically increase water and land footprints. The UNU advocates for integrating environmental considerations into AI governance to ensure these issues are not sidelined in policy discussions.
