Congressman Sanford Bishop Expresses Disappointment Over Moderate Democrats' Vote with Republicans on Procedural Rule
Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-Georgia) voiced his disappointment after two moderate Democrats, Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington state, voted with Republicans on a procedural rule. This vote helped Republicans avoid an embarrassing loss on the House floor, despite a revolt from House conservatives. The decision by Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez to cross party lines caught Democratic leadership by surprise. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar have requested the Committee on Caucus Rules to address this issue, calling it a "significant breach of trust." Bishop acknowledged that representatives vote based on their constituents' best interests but expressed regret that the Democratic team could not maintain unity on a vote that he believed was for the American people.
