Energy Transition Minerals Faces Legal Battle with Greenland Over Rare Earth Project Expropriation
Energy Transition Minerals (ETM), an Australian-listed company, is embroiled in a legal dispute with Greenland over the Kvanefjeld rare earth project. Greenland has blocked the development of this project, one of the largest rare earth deposits outside China, by refusing to renew the exploration license. ETM has invested approximately $150 million in the project since 2013, advancing it through various stages including resource definition and environmental studies. However, the Greenland government passed Act 20, which bans projects with uranium concentrations above 100 parts per million, effectively halting the project. ETM argues that this legislation was specifically designed to stop Kvanefjeld, despite Greenland's claims of being open to mining projects. The company is seeking reinstatement of its mining license application rather than financial compensation.
