Canadian Town Begins Cleanup of 330,000 Gallons of Rotting Fish Sauce After 20 Years
The small town of St. Mary's in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, is finally addressing a long-standing environmental issue caused by an abandoned fish sauce factory. The Atlantic Seafood Sauce Company left behind over 330,000 gallons of fermenting fish sauce in 110 tanks when it shut down in the early 2000s. The decomposing contents have emitted a foul odor, affecting the community for over two decades. A large-scale cleanup operation has now commenced, funded by the Newfoundland and Labrador government, which has allocated approximately CA$1.7 million to the project.
