Vancouver Businesses Concerned Over Misdemeanor Citation Limits
Business owners in Vancouver are expressing concerns over a new police policy that limits citations for certain misdemeanor offenses. The policy was introduced due to an unfunded Washington Supreme Court mandate that restricts public defender caseloads, coupled with local budget constraints. Business owners fear that the policy could lead to an increase in low-level crimes, as offenders might perceive fewer repercussions. The policy aims to prioritize serious cases by referring low-level misdemeanors to the City Attorney’s office for charging decisions, rather than issuing on-the-spot citations.
