US Church Group Transforms Surrendered Firearms into Art and Tools
Disarmory Ministries, a nonprofit based in Berkley, Michigan, is actively engaged in a program that converts unwanted firearms into art, jewelry, and garden tools. The organization facilitates gun buybacks, offering gift cards in exchange for firearms. Initially, Disarmory turned over collected guns to the Michigan State Police (MSP), but after discovering in 2023 that an MSP contractor was reselling gun parts, the nonprofit began disposing of and repurposing the firearms in-house. This process involves breaking down the guns and then utilizing their components to create new objects. The Very Rev. Chris Yaw, founder of Disarmory, stated that the initiative aims to provide a safe and easy method for individuals to dispose of unwanted guns, thereby contributing to community safety by reducing the number of unused firearms. William Harris, one of the gun "choppers" for Disarmory, noted the therapeutic effect of the program for participants, many of whom have experienced gun-related tragedies.
