Governor Jared Polis Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Fallen Firefighter in Colorado
Governor Jared Polis has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday to honor Nathan Matthews, a firefighter who died from injuries sustained while battling a wildfire in western Colorado. Matthews, a member of the U.S. Forest Service Rifle Helitack crew, was injured during a burnover incident on June 27, which also claimed the lives of three other firefighters. The burnover occurred when the fire spread rapidly, closing off escape routes. A helicopter was unable to land due to smoke, complicating rescue efforts. Matthews succumbed to his injuries on July 24. A procession to honor Matthews will take place, traveling from Denver to Grand Junction, with the public encouraged to safely view the procession from designated areas.
