Online Platforms Urged to Enhance Age Assurance Amid Consumer Concerns
A recent study by Jumio highlights the growing pressure on online platforms to implement effective age assurance measures to protect minors. The study, which surveyed 8,003 adults across the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Mexico, found that 81% of global consumers believe access to age-gated materials online is harmful to minors. While there is strong consumer support for age verification, opinions vary on who should be responsible for protecting minors online. The majority of respondents pointed to parents, followed by government agencies, tech marketplaces, and individual apps and websites. Despite the support for stronger protections, consumers are hesitant to share personal information for age verification, with 33% avoiding platforms that require personal data and 38% opting for less secure platforms to avoid identity checks.
