India Expands Digital Health Card System to Enhance Healthcare Access
India is advancing its digital health infrastructure through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which includes the implementation of digital health cards. These cards serve as electronic identities that store and manage medical records and healthcare information securely. The initiative aims to connect patients, hospitals, doctors, and insurers within a unified digital ecosystem. The digital health card system includes government-issued health IDs, known as ABHA, and insurer-issued digital health insurance cards. The ABHA ID allows individuals to store and share medical records digitally, while insurer-issued cards facilitate cashless treatment and claim processing. This system is designed to improve healthcare management, reduce paperwork, and ensure continuity of care across different hospitals.
