Austal USA Begins Construction on Fifth Navy Landing Craft Utility Vessel, Enhancing U.S. Naval Capabilities
Austal USA has commenced construction on its fifth U.S. Navy Landing Craft Utility (LCU) 1700-class vessel, designated LCU 1714, at its ship manufacturing facility in Mobile, Alabama. This development is part of a broader initiative to bolster the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps' expeditionary capabilities. The company was awarded a $91.5 million contract in September 2023 to design and construct up to 12 LCUs, with five contracts already in place. The LCU vessels are crucial for transporting Marine Corps vehicles, equipment, and personnel from ship to shore, offering significant heavy-lift capabilities. The first vessel in this program, LCU 1710, has recently completed acceptance trials and is set for delivery to the Navy. Austal USA's efforts are part of its expanding steel shipbuilding portfolio, which includes 12 ships currently under construction across various programs.
