Graphicstudio Project 'Printing Black America' Acquired by Major U.S. Museums, Extending Du Bois's Legacy
The collaborative print portfolio, 'Printing Black America: Du Bois’s Data Portraits in the 21st Century,' created by artist William Villalongo and urbanist Shraddha Ramani, has been acquired by several prominent U.S. museums and academic institutions. These include the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The project updates W.E.B. Du Bois’s original data visualizations from the 1900 World’s Fair with contemporary data and perspectives on the social and economic realities of Black Americans. The portfolio, comprising 30 images, was developed with contributions from six publishers across the United States, including Graphicstudio at the University of South Florida. The initiative also involved collaboration with historian Nell Painter and the Center for Africana Digital Humanities Lab at Clark Atlanta University.
