Legislative Attacks on Ballot Measures Threaten Direct Democracy and Equity
A recent report by the Fairness Project highlights a significant increase in legislative attacks on the ballot measure process, with a 95% rise since the 2023 legislative session. These attacks include raising signature thresholds, shrinking petition windows, and imposing criminal penalties on signature gatherers. Such measures make it more difficult for communities, particularly those advocating for equity and justice, to use direct democracy to effect change. Ballot measures have historically been a vital tool for expanding Medicaid, protecting abortion rights, and raising wages. However, the current legislative efforts threaten to undermine this democratic process, making it harder for communities to influence policy.
