Mississippi Delta Hospital Closure Sparks Push for Reopening After Pregnant Woman's Death
The closure of Humphreys County Memorial Hospital in Belzoni, Mississippi, has led to a tragic incident where Harmony Ball-Stribling, a pregnant woman, died on the roadside due to a lack of nearby medical facilities. The hospital, which closed 13 years ago, was the nearest facility to Ball-Stribling during her medical emergency in 2021. Her death has galvanized local and state leaders to push for the reopening of the hospital. The community, which has been without a hospital, emergency room, or urgent care clinic, is now facing significant health disparities, including high infant mortality rates. State Rep. Timaka James-Jones, who is related to Ball-Stribling, is among those advocating for the hospital's reopening.
