Ig Nobel Prizes Held in Zurich for First Time, Stuart West Among Honorees
The Ig Nobel Prizes, an annual satirical science awards ceremony, was held outside the U.S. for the first time in its 35-year history, taking place in Zurich, Switzerland. The shift in venue was due to concerns regarding attendees' ability to obtain visas. Ten research teams were honored for their unusual and imaginative contributions to science. Among the recipients were Stuart West from the University of Oxford and Catherine F. Talbot from the Florida Institute of Technology, who were recognized for their work in reconstructing the evolutionary history of kissing. Other awarded research included studies on cockroach milk, analyzing soil health using buried underwear, and the science of nose-blowing. The ceremony maintained its tradition of audience members throwing paper airplanes towards the stage.
