Federal Appeals Court Delays President Trump's $83 Million Payment to E. Jean Carroll Pending Supreme Court Review
A federal appeals court has ruled that President Trump will not have to pay the $83.3 million defamation award to writer E. Jean Carroll until the U.S. Supreme Court either reviews the case or rejects an appeal. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York issued the order, granting a request by Trump's lawyers to delay the payment while he seeks Supreme Court review. The court also required Trump to increase the bond by $7.46 million to account for interest that would accrue on Carroll's award during any further legal proceedings. Carroll's lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, expressed satisfaction with the court's decision to condition the stay on Trump posting a bond of nearly $100 million. This development follows a January 2024 jury decision ordering Trump to pay Carroll for defaming her in 2019 after she accused him of rape. Trump has consistently denied the allegations.
