New Zealand to Acquire Strike Drones to Enhance Defense Capabilities
New Zealand has announced plans to purchase long-range one-way strike drones, with a preference for local suppliers, as part of its defense modernization efforts. Defense Minister Chris Penk stated that this initiative aims to boost local manufacturing and strengthen the country's defense capabilities. The government is also initiating research on unarmed long-range uncrewed aircraft for maritime surveillance, encouraging New Zealand businesses to participate. These one-way strike drones are human-operated systems designed to deliver explosives to targets without returning, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional missiles. The Defense Force's operating budget is NZ$2.6 billion, with over 80% already spent domestically. New Zealand's industry is noted for its expertise in advanced manufacturing and digital technologies, with a growing number of firms developing drone and simulation technologies.
