FAO Reports Increase in Global Food Prices Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations reported a rise in the global food commodity index in July, driven by increases in cereal, sugar, and vegetable oil prices. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points, up 0.6% from the previous month. Wheat prices surged by 6% due to disruptions in Black Sea exports and heatwaves affecting crop yields. Maize prices also increased by 3.6%, influenced by dry weather in the U.S. and geopolitical tensions. In contrast, barley prices fell by 1.9% due to favorable crop prospects in Australia and the Black Sea region.
