Argentine-Linked Network Spreads False Moroccan Migration Narrative in Brazil, Involving U.S.-Based Accounts
An Argentine-linked network has been actively promoting a false narrative claiming a significant influx of Moroccan immigrants into Brazil's Santa Catarina state. This narrative falsely attributes the supposed migration wave to the immigration policies of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Brazil's Lupa Observatory identified over 13,400 mentions of this narrative across social media platforms and websites between August 21 and 27. The majority of these posts, approximately 11,000, were in Spanish, with 2,000 in Portuguese, and primarily originated from Argentine users. Lupa's analysis, utilizing the Meltwater Explore monitoring platform, revealed that accounts involved in disseminating this false information were based in Argentina, Brazil, and the United States.
