Texas Gas to End Decades-Old Free Gas Rights for Muhlenberg County Residents in 2027
Residents in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, are facing the termination of their long-standing free gas rights, which are set to expire in 2027. These rights were established through contracts with Texas Gas Transmission, LLC when the company developed underground storage fields beneath their properties decades ago. Many residents received letters from Texas Gas informing them that these services would be discontinued. The company has stated that it no longer requires the underground gas storage rights granted under these agreements. As a result, landowners who currently receive free gas will lose this benefit. Texas Gas is offering a one-time payment of $2,000 to affected landowners to assist with the transition to alternative energy sources. However, some residents argue that this amount is insufficient, estimating that converting an average home to an alternative energy source could cost between $8,000 and $10,000.
