UT Dallas Researchers Advance 3D-Printed Zirconia Dental Crowns for Same-Day Treatment
Researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas), with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), have developed a new technology that could enable dentists to produce permanent 3D-printed zirconia dental restorations in a single day. Zirconia is highly valued for its strength and durability in dental work. The innovation addresses a significant bottleneck in the 3D printing process for zirconia crowns: the debinding stage. Traditionally, debinding, which removes resin from the printed crown, can take 20 to 100 hours. The UT Dallas method reduces this to less than 30 minutes by combining improved heat transfer with porous graphite felt and a vacuum system to efficiently remove gases released during the process. This advancement aims to make same-day permanent zirconia restorations commercially viable, offering greater personalization and faster treatment for patients.
