Space-Based Missile Defense Faces Cost Challenges in Golden Dome's Budget Plan
The Golden Dome missile defense system, a project initiated under President Trump's administration, is facing potential cost challenges, particularly concerning the deployment of space-based interceptors. Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein, the program's leader, informed the House Armed Services Strategic Forces subcommittee that the affordability and scalability of deploying satellites for missile interception remain uncertain. The Golden Dome system, which aims to provide a comprehensive missile defense shield, has a projected cost of $185 billion, with $17.5 billion requested in the Defense Department's 2027 budget. Despite the high costs, the program is expected to be included in the baseline budget for several years, indicating ongoing support.
