Dr. Margaret Newhouse's Legacy as a Pioneer Female Doctor in Shelby County
Dr. Margaret Newhouse, a trailblazing female doctor in Shelby County, Indiana, is remembered for her significant contributions to the local medical community. Born in 1905 in Indianapolis, Newhouse pursued a career in medicine at a time when female doctors were rare. After completing her education, she opened a practice in Morristown, Indiana, where she became well-respected for her medical skills and community involvement. Despite societal challenges, she successfully ran her practice and later worked in physical therapy and with Planned Parenthood. Her dedication to medicine continued well into her later years, providing flu shots and medical care to her community until her passing in 1999 at the age of 94.
