UC Berkeley's People's Park Development Faces Delays Amid Housing Promises
UC Berkeley's development of People's Park into student housing is nearing completion, with a $312 million dormitory set to open for over 1,100 undergraduates. However, the project intended to provide housing for those displaced by the development has yet to begin. The park, historically significant for its role in the Free Speech movement, has been a site of contention, with protests and legal challenges delaying progress. Despite these challenges, the university plans to restore 60% of the site as open public space. The second phase of the project, aimed at providing supportive housing for the unhoused, remains unfunded and without a start date.
