UN Establishes Independent Scientific Panel for AI Governance to Guide Global Policy
The United Nations has established an independent scientific panel to guide AI governance, as part of the Global Digital Compact adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future. This initiative aims to ground international AI deliberations in evidence rather than assumptions. The panel, formalized by the UN General Assembly in August 2025 through resolution A/RES/79/325, operates independently of any government, company, or institution. It is supported by a secretariat within the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies. The panel's creation is particularly significant for the biomedical community, where AI innovation is advancing rapidly, outpacing the ability of regulators, clinicians, and patients to evaluate it. The panel's mandate includes providing independent scientific assessments to help realize AI's potential in health and other domains.
