NYPD Officer Gerard Carter's Killer Dies in Prison, Ending Parole Concerns
Shatiek Johnson, the man convicted of fatally shooting NYPD officer Gerard Carter in 1998, has died in prison. Johnson, who was 45 years old, had been serving a maximum sentence at Attica Correctional Facility for over 25 years. The cause of his death is currently under investigation, with authorities conducting a toxicology report. Johnson was 17 when he shot Officer Carter, who was on patrol in a marked police van outside a Staten Island housing development. Carter succumbed to his injuries days later, leaving behind a young son. Johnson's death brings closure to Carter's family, who had been concerned about the possibility of his release on parole.
