Global Cooling Demand Spurs Interest in Energy-Efficient Air Conditioners
The global demand for cooling is surging, with electricity consumption for cooling equipment reaching 5,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022, equivalent to the entire electricity usage of the United States. This demand is projected to triple to 18,000 TWh by 2050, according to RMI. To address this, companies like Transaera are developing innovative air conditioning systems that use 40% less energy than traditional models. Transaera's technology incorporates heat pumps and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to dehumidify air without excessive cooling, significantly reducing energy consumption. MOFs, a Nobel Prize-winning material, can extract moisture from the air efficiently, making spaces more comfortable at lower energy costs. Amazon has already adopted this technology in some facilities, and other commercial entities are following suit.
