U.S. Department of Energy Selects Five States for Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the selection of Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Idaho as finalists for its Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus initiative. This initiative aims to create integrated regional nuclear ecosystems that span the entire nuclear lifecycle, from fuel fabrication to waste management. The DOE reviewed 28 applications from 26 states before choosing these five. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has signed non-binding memorandums of understanding with each state to further evaluate their proposals. The initiative seeks to foster public-private partnerships and leverage state participation to develop infrastructure supporting the nuclear lifecycle, potentially addressing issues like spent nuclear fuel disposal.
