Secretary of State Read Urges Portland to Improve Election Signature Verification Amid Controversy
Secretary of State Tobias Read has called on the Portland city auditor to enhance the transparency and accountability of the city's election signature verification process. This comes after allegations from the backers of a ballot initiative, including the Portland Police Association, who claimed that the city and Multnomah County officials mishandled the verification of 63,000 signatures. The initiative, which aims to redirect city climate tax revenues to hire more police officers, requires at least 40,437 verified signatures to qualify for the November ballot. The petitioners accused officials of discarding entire signature sheets without clear communication and alleged political bias, though they provided little evidence. Preliminary sampling suggested the initiative might not meet the required threshold, with a 63% acceptance rate from the first sample of 5,067 signatures.
