Representative Bill Foster Introduces Legislation to Enhance Oversight of Third-Party Financial Vendors Amid Rising AI Cyber Threats
U.S. Representative Bill Foster (D-Illinois) has introduced the Strengthening Oversight for the Financial Sector Act. This proposed legislation aims to grant the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) increased oversight powers over third-party vendors in the financial sector. According to Foster, the bill is a response to the growing risks of artificial intelligence-fueled cyber threats and supply chain vulnerabilities. He emphasized that while other regulators possess such authority, and the NCUA temporarily had it, that power has since expired. Foster stated in a press release that the bill would provide regulators with the necessary tools to better protect Americans' money and sensitive data from evolving AI-assisted cyber threats. The introduction of this bill comes as the FHFA is already intensifying its efforts to combat fraud, having added 51 names to its Suspended Counterparty Program this year, surpassing previous years' rates.
