Boeing Explores AESA Radar Integration for Apache Helicopter to Enhance Capabilities
Boeing is actively exploring the integration of an active, electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar onto the Apache attack helicopter. This initiative, in collaboration with the U.S. Army, aims to significantly enhance the helicopter's situational awareness and target detection capabilities. The AESA radar is expected to extend the Apache's target detection range beyond the current capabilities of the Lockheed Martin/Northrop Grumman Longbow radar. This advancement would allow the Apache to engage targets from a greater distance, improving its survivability and effectiveness, particularly in its new role against uncrewed air systems (UAS) in the Middle East. Boeing is considering mounting the AESA radar on the helicopter's fuselage, which would eliminate the need for the rotor-mast-mounted Longbow, thereby improving aerodynamics. The U.S. Army will ultimately decide on the integration of the AESA radar, as they establish their requirements.
