Novo Nordisk Announces Positive Results for Semaglutide in Pediatric Obesity Trial
Novo Nordisk has released the initial findings from its STEP Young phase 3 trial, which evaluated the efficacy of once-weekly semaglutide in combination with lifestyle modifications for children aged 6 to under 12 years with obesity. The trial successfully met its primary endpoint, demonstrating a significant reduction in Body Mass Index (BMI) among children treated with semaglutide compared to those receiving a placebo. Specifically, 40.4% of children in the semaglutide group were no longer classified as having obesity after 68 weeks, whereas none in the placebo group achieved this. Both groups adhered to lifestyle changes, including a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The safety and tolerability profile of semaglutide in this pediatric population was consistent with previous trials in adults and adolescents, with no new safety concerns identified, including those related to growth or pubertal development.
