Seattle Kraken's Book Club Challenge Inspires Students to Read Over 100,000 Hours
The Seattle Kraken, a local hockey team, organized a statewide reading competition called the Kraken Book Club Challenge. This initiative encouraged students from various schools to log their reading minutes throughout March, with the promise of a pizza party for the winning class. Rohan Agarwal, a fourth grader from Hazel Wolf K-8 ESTEM School, and his classmates participated enthusiastically, motivated by their support for the local sports team. The class managed to accumulate an impressive total of over 100,000 hours of reading, averaging 67 hours per student. Their efforts earned them a $750 pizza party budget, along with Kraken-themed classroom decorations and student giveaways. The competition saw participation from 83 schools across 35 communities.
