Atlanta Train Attack: Man Charged with Murder of Great-Grandmother
A 25-year-old man, John Elijah Matthews, has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of Margaret Swan, a 66-year-old woman, on an Atlanta commuter train. The incident occurred on a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train, where Matthews allegedly attacked Swan in an unprovoked manner, stabbing her up to 20 times with a small pocket knife. The attack was captured on video, showing Matthews standing next to Swan before launching the assault. Despite the presence of other passengers, Matthews did not target anyone else. After the attack, he calmly waited for the train to stop at Oakland City Station, where he was arrested by MARTA police. Swan, a retired daycare worker, was a regular transit user and is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. MARTA has expressed condolences to Swan's family and emphasized its commitment to rider safety, noting the presence of 12,000 security cameras and a police force of 280 officers.
