UK Community Investigates PFOA Contamination Near Chemical Factory
In 2024, the Wyre borough council and the Environment Agency in the UK launched an investigation into PFOA contamination in Thornton-Cleveleys, a town north of Blackpool. This investigation was prompted by concerns from residents, including one individual whose pet ducks' eggs were found to be contaminated with PFAS chemicals. PFOA, a Group 1 carcinogen, was globally banned in 2020 but was emitted in significant quantities from the AGC Chemicals Europe factory in the area until 2012. PFAS chemicals, often referred to as 'forever chemicals,' are known for their persistence in the environment. The community's concerns escalated as residents questioned whether these persistent chemicals were present in their own bodies, highlighting the long-term impact of industrial pollution.
