Maine's Budget Surplus Replenishes Rainy Day Fund, Supports Infrastructure
Maine has ended its 2026 fiscal year with a $148 million budget surplus, which has been used to replenish the state's 'rainy day fund' to its legal maximum. The surplus allocation includes $26.2 million directed to the rainy day fund, ensuring financial stability for future needs. Additionally, $115.6 million of the surplus is allocated to the state's highway and bridge capital fund, addressing critical infrastructure needs. The Maine Department of Transportation will also receive $20.3 million from the highway fund surplus, providing a total of $136 million in additional revenue for infrastructure projects. Governor Janet Mills highlighted the state's prudent budgeting and strong fiscal footing, which have been recognized by credit rating agencies.
