Lidl Surpasses Morrisons as Fifth-Largest UK Supermarket Amid Sales Growth
Lidl has officially overtaken Morrisons to become the fifth-largest supermarket in the UK, according to recent data from Wordpanel by Numerator. For the 12 weeks leading up to May 17, 2026, Lidl's market share increased to a record 8.6%, up from 8.1% the previous year. This growth was driven by an 8.8% increase in sales and over £661 million in switching gains as customers moved from other supermarkets. Lidl's expansion in the UK has been significant since its entry in 1994, with more than 60% of households now shopping at the discount retailer. The broader grocery market also saw modest growth, with take-home sales rising by 1.5% and inflation rates easing. Other retailers like Ocado, Tesco, and Sainsbury's also reported sales growth, although at varying rates.
