Iceland's New Border System Causes Delays for Non-Schengen Passengers
Passengers arriving at Keflavík International Airport from outside the Schengen area are experiencing significantly longer wait times at border control. The introduction of a new entry system has increased processing times from 15-20 seconds to over a minute per passenger, with some checks taking up to 90 seconds. This has resulted in lengthy queues, particularly during peak arrival periods when flights from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom land simultaneously. The new system requires border officers to collect fingerprints, photographs, and scan passports, with data being sent to Brussels, which can cause further delays. Despite additional funding and more border officers, the self-service kiosks installed to improve efficiency remain non-operational.
