Iowa Climbers Coalition Establishes New Rock Climbing Destination at Prairie Creek Recreation Area
The Iowa Climbers Coalition has successfully developed the Prairie Creek Recreation Area in Maquoketa, Iowa, into a new rock climbing destination. The site, which officially opened in June, has already begun attracting climbers from various Midwestern states, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Chicago, and Des Moines. On a recent Sunday, coalition members engaged in maintenance activities, breaking down rocks and constructing retaining walls around the base of the limestone cliffs. This work aims to ensure the area remains clear, safe, and accessible for climbers. Jake DeVoulder, vice president of the Iowa Climbers Coalition, emphasized that these trail-building efforts are designed for long-term sustainability, preventing erosion and maintaining the integrity of the area. The nonprofit initiated preparations for the cliffs in May, collaborating with the Jackson County Conservation Board.
