Ball State University Settles Free Speech Lawsuit for $225K
Suzanne Swierc, a former employee of Ball State University, will receive a $225,000 settlement after being fired for a Facebook post about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on Swierc's behalf, claiming her termination violated her free speech rights. Swierc's post, which criticized Kirk following his assassination, led to significant backlash against the university, including threats to withdraw donations and student enrollments. Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns defended the firing, citing the disruption caused by the post, but acknowledged the settlement was a cost-effective resolution.
