US Natural Gas Exports to Mexico Reach Record Highs, Highlighting Mexico's Energy Vulnerability
U.S. natural gas exports to Mexico have reached a record average of 6.8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) through July 2026. This surge is primarily driven by Mexico's expanding power generation sector, which now accounts for 67% of its national gas supply. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), imports grew 1.8% year-over-year, marking four consecutive years of growth. Monthly delivery figures showed increased momentum in late spring and summer, with imports continuously exceeding 7 Bcf/d for the first three-month period, reaching a monthly record of 7.6 Bcf/d in June. This heavy reliance on cross-border pipelines has exposed Mexico's industrial and electricity sectors to significant operational deficits during temporary supply disruptions, such as recent scheduled maintenance on a Texas pipeline supplying the Los Ramones system in Nuevo Leon, which temporarily reduced shipments by one-fifth. This reduction created a 15% deficit relative to Mexico's national apparent con...
