Grand Rapids Increases Police Patrol and Cleanup Efforts for ArtPrize Event
Grand Rapids, Michigan, is preparing for its largest ArtPrize event to date, expecting over one million visitors. The 16-day event, which begins on Friday, features 1,100 artists and 1,025 entries, marking the highest number in eight years. Last year's ArtPrize attracted 967,000 visitors and generated an economic impact of $82.6 million. To accommodate the influx of people and maintain public safety and cleanliness, the Grand Rapids Police Department is adding three community officers and a second-shift traffic unit. Additionally, the city is deploying a second-shift street and sidewalk cleaning crew and expanding the coverage of its Homeless Outreach Team. City Manager Mark Washington stated that the goal is to keep the city vibrant, welcoming, and safe for everyone. GRPD Chief Joe Trigg emphasized that officers will be visible and accessible downtown, with expanded community policing and traffic enforcement to ensure safe movement throughout the city.
