Young Japanese Artists Transform School Blackboards into Creative Canvases in National Contest
Young Japanese artists are utilizing school blackboards as canvases for an annual national chalk art championship called 'Kokuban Art Koshien.' Initiated in 2015 by Nichigaku Co., a Tokyo-based blackboard maker, the contest invites students from approximately 300 high schools and junior high schools to create artworks on blackboards during their summer break. The competition emphasizes the impermanence of life, as the artworks are often erased, marking the completion of the art's journey. The contest has gained popularity, showcasing a variety of themes from popular manga scenes to everyday life depictions. The winners of the contest are announced in November.
