Wildfire Risks Drive Up Costs for Northwest Utilities
Utilities in the Pacific Northwest are investing heavily in wildfire mitigation projects to prevent catastrophic events linked to their infrastructure. With approximately 20,000 miles of transmission lines in the region, fire-proofing the grid has become a costly and complex challenge. For instance, PacifiCorp recently settled a federal lawsuit for $2.2 billion after its power lines were linked to six wildfires in Oregon and California, which burned nearly 300,000 acres of public land. Other utilities, such as Puget Sound Energy and Avista, are also spending millions annually on measures like vegetation management, equipment upgrades, and installing smoke-detecting cameras. However, these costs are being passed on to customers through significant rate hikes, raising concerns about affordability and the effectiveness of these investments. Consumer advocates and state regulators are now scrutinizing these expenditures to ensure they are both necessary and cost-effective [IJPR, 2026-09-07].
