Normal Fire Potential Expected in Montana This Spring
Forecasters from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) predict a normal wildfire season for the Northern Rockies this spring, despite a warm winter and low snowpack. The NIFC, based in Boise, indicates that major wildfire activity is not anticipated, although this is not a guarantee. The region experienced dry, warm, and windy conditions that led to several large fires in early March. However, the forecast suggests that upcoming cool and wet weather, interspersed with warm and dry spells, will contribute to a typical fire season for April. The soil has accumulated near-normal precipitation since last fall, which supports this outlook. The extended forecast through June and July also suggests normal fire activity across the Rockies.
