Seacoast Trust Aims for Long-Term Sustainability and Tribal Sovereignty in Southeast Alaska
The Seacoast Trust, established to perpetually fund the Sustainable Southeast Partnership (SSP), is working towards a goal of raising $100 million to support economic stability, environmental stewardship, and cultural vitality in Southeast Alaska. Kaylah Duncan, Spruce Root development manager for the Seacoast Trust, emphasizes that this initiative is an investment in long-term sustainability, Tribal Sovereignty, and the self-determination of Alaska Native Tribes and rural communities. The Trust aims to provide flexible capital that allows local communities to invest in their defined needs, such as workforce development, food security, small business support, and energy initiatives. This approach contrasts with reliance on unpredictable public funding, which has historically shifted with administrations. The Seacoast Trust is celebrating its fifth anniversary and has currently raised $30 million, with $70 million remaining to reach its target.
