Melinda French Gates has transitioned from her role at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to focus on her own philanthropic endeavors through Pivotal Ventures. This move follows her divorce from Bill Gates in 2021. While the former couple maintained professional relations within the Gates Foundation for a period, French Gates has now fully dedicated her efforts to Pivotal Ventures. Her new organization primarily concentrates on advancing women's rights, including supporting women in leadership, promoting equality, and advocating for reproductive rights. This includes funding access to contraception and backing political candidates who support abortion rights, such as Kamala Harris. French Gates emphasizes that supporting women ultimately benefits everyone, marking a distinct public identity separate from her previous association with Microsoft's co-founder.
