World Ovarian Cancer Coalition Publishes Study Highlighting Disparities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
The World Ovarian Cancer Coalition has published a comprehensive study in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women’s Health, focusing on the experiences of women with ovarian cancer in 22 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study, known as the Every Woman Study™ LMIC, is the first of its kind to capture the lived experiences of women in these regions, where 70% of ovarian cancer diagnoses occur. The research involved 2,446 women from 82 hospitals across Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. Key findings reveal significant gaps in awareness, financial impact, and symptom recognition. Only one in four women had prior knowledge of ovarian cancer, and many faced financial hardships due to the disease. The study calls for immediate action from governments and health systems to address these disparities.
