Flyttr Establishes Large Biosecurity Facility in San Antonio to Combat Screwworm Threat
Flyttr is constructing a new, expansive facility in San Antonio, Texas, spanning over 130,000 square feet, to address the threat posed by the New World screwworm. This parasitic pest is known to be devastating to livestock, wildlife, and, in rare instances, humans, and has already been detected in Texas. The company's initiative, known as the FastFly program, aims to bolster the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to control the screwworm population by introducing sterile flies. This new facility will integrate various critical functions, including research, engineering, manufacturing, and scale-up operations, all under one roof. The establishment of this site is expected to create more than 50 jobs initially, with further hiring anticipated as the facility expands its operations. Flyttr emphasizes that this platform will enable the rapid development and deployment of countermeasures against various pest threats, moving from concept to production in months rather than years.
