Woman Injured in Bear Attack in Whistler Backcountry, Trails Closed
A woman was hospitalized on Friday after being attacked by a bear in the backcountry near Whistler, British Columbia. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. PT near Conflict Lake in the Callaghan Conservancy, where a group of three hikers encountered two bears. One of the bears attacked the woman, causing a severely lacerated leg, before disengaging. Whistler Search and Rescue assisted in transporting conservation officers to the scene and evacuating the injured woman by helicopter. She was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Following the attack, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) swept the area and killed an adult male black bear at the site due to safety concerns. However, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the attacking bear was a black bear or a grizzly bear. The area is known grizzly habitat, prompting warnings for hikers to take continuous precautions, including making constant noise.
