Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidate, has sparked controversy in the New York congressional race with her past remarks on social media. Avila Chevalier, who recently received an endorsement from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has been criticized for her derogatory comments about President Joe Biden, whom she labeled a 'rapist' and 'war criminal' during the 2020 presidential election. Her candidacy poses a challenge to incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, a five-term congressman. Avila Chevalier's platform includes radical positions such as abolishing prisons, legalizing prostitution, and ending military support to Israel. Her endorsement by Mamdani has caused friction within the Democratic Party, with concerns that it could lead to an upset similar to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's victory over Joe Crowley in 2018.
